Sacred Bamboo is often grown for its foliage which has colourful red and green leaves. Small, white flowers are followed by red berries in autumn. Birds spread the berries into bushland, and that is when it becomes a problem. The berries appear to be toxic to a range of animals, including dogs, cats, cattle and can be fatal to birds.
Spreads by seed and from cuttings and fallen stems. It grows readily from dumped garden waste, and berries carried by birds and animals may also sprout in the right conditions.
Remove and bag the berries and place them in your landfill bin. For plant removal to prevent spreading, after removing the berries to landfill bin, the whole plant can be dug out and placed in the greenwaste bin.
